How to Prevent Urinary Tract Infections

urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection that affects part of the urinary tract i.e the urethra, bladder, ureters, or the kidneys. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are more common among women than men.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF UTI’S

1) Frequent urination esp. with a sudden urgency to urinate
2) Severe abdominal pain esp. the Lower abs
3) Cramps in the stomach or Bladder fullness
4) Burning sensation while urinating
5) Blood / Pus in urine
6) Low Grade fever
7) Overall feeling of being Unwell  

TIPS TO PREVENT UTI’s

1. DRINK AMPLE OF WATER. It is important to stay hydrated at all times.

2. DO-NOT HOLD IT. Make sure you don’t hold your urine when you feel the urgency to go.

3. LET THE GENITALS BREATHE. Wear the right size & comfortable underwear, which is preferably cotton rather than the synthetic options. Make sure you change them daily.

4. IF YOU’RE SEXUALLY ACTIVE, KEEP YOURSELF CLEAN. Urinate and clean yourself thoroughly, both before and after sex.

5. CONTROL YOUR SALT & CAFFEINE INTAKE. Excess of either causes dehydration.

6. FOR WOMEN:

a) CHANGE YOUR SANITARY PADS AT REGULAR INTERVALS.

b) WIPE RIGHT. Be sure to wipe from front to back, so that the bacteria from the anus DO NOT reaching the genitals.

Usually, most UTIs can be treated with a complete course of antibiotics. However, it is very important to start the medication at the right time so as to relieve your discomfort as soon as possible.
